A couple of days ago I saw a TV programme about New Guinea wild-life. There was a fantastic caterpillar colony that had aggregated in large numbers so that it resembled a snake - fine deterent to predators and an extra-ordinary example of mimicry.
I could imagine these caterpillars of yours doing the same thing.
