Thanks for your help, Neil. When I chose 8 (which was the answer given in the back of the book) for cell e7, the rest was easy. When I tried the other possibility, 6, there were 3 possible solutions -- slight permutations of one another. Interesting that when I put the original puzzle into my little Sudoku machine, it immediately gave the solution using the 8 in e7. I'm very curious about the mathematical background for these Sudoku puzzles. Hope to learn some of that on this site. What makes a puzzle easy or hard aside from the number of numbers given, etc.?
Well, thanks again and Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you may favor.

Hello Neil - I am not a Detroiter nor a Dearbornite! I live in the peaceful country far from the city.
I would like to wish you and your family a very Blessed Christmas.
Happy New Year, too!

Hello Neil
Thank you for replying so clearly and completely to my enquiry. I will have a look at SE as suggested. I am a self-taught sudoku player and was pleased when I was completing the 'advanced' puzzles in our newspaper, but I am finding the 'tough' puzzles tough indeed. I will try to learn the technique names so that I can understand the comments better.
Many thanks again.

Hello Neil - hope all is well with you.
I always try to make my pudding awhile before Christmas but don't usually manage it this early. Last night my daughter and I finished off the remains of last year's pudding.
BTW, loved your joke yesterday.
Cheers,
Anne

Hi Neil! I saw your comment the other day about CP & Friday the 13th so I guess you are still 'lurking'. I miss you. Would love to see you comment more often. IMHO the site needs more witty comments & fewer puzzles!

Do you have any idea how many times people 'correct' the spelling of my name?
