ooh MizT. on the archives you were asking about 'rutabagas',
looking at Mr Google. in Australia we know them as Swedes.
I don't particularly like them, but would use them in Soup

I am assuming you have shops more like England? Where there was a green grocer for produce?

Growing up, our big Sunday meal was at noon. We called it dinner. Mom would usually make a roast, pan fried chicken.

Hi Ruby.

Not a fan of Parsnips either, only in the Soup.

Peter loves them roasted. a Roast is not a Roast without Parsnip !!

I have a new name for rutabagas, but better tell you in private, it is not a polite name. Yes I heard they are called swedes, they grow in colder climates.

I've been out of town and in and out. Have made several trips to the little city down the road (pop, 20,000), seen the HP movie and have the new HP book. Went to the midnight book sale with all the kids in horned-rim glasses and cloaks. Glad this is the last of the books.

That's ok MizT. I make pan fried chicken and it doesn't taste anything like my mom's did. My sister won't make it because her hubby and 2 boys eat a lot.

Don't like parsnips, rutabagas, or turnips. (The greens are OK)

Becky, frying chicken took a long time to get enough for a family. It has been AGES since I fried any, but I remember.

My dad used to like dandelion greens. Everytime I see them in the yard, I think of homemade wine and him eating them.

Thanks Rola for the info on rutabagas. I had heard of them due to watching American TV shows but had no idea they were swedes! MizT, I have an excellent thing you can do with them...put them straight in the compost bin!

Those rutabagas are supposed to be very healthy. but I do not think the side effects are worth it.

I'm with you Ruby, not a fan of any of them! When my mum used to put them in stews, I would think they were a piece of potato then once it was in my mouth, I knew I'd made a mistake. Learnt at a very early age how to distinguish one white veg from another!

BECKY, you are the second person from OHIO I know who wuld have noodles and potatoes in the same meal. I would think them both as a starch, and serve only one! Either Or, never both. Like in my family, we do not have both potatoes and dressing oh Holidays, both are starches. Way my mom taught me I guess.

Hubby's mom was 'shocked' when I told her about potatoes and noodles in one meal. They are both starches, but they taste good together. It must be the German influence. I think it was done as a cheap filler.

Becky, nutritionally, it is not a lot different from having some bread with your potatoes, rolls or biscuits, both are wheat. It just seems, well, you said it, shocking heheheh.
