MizT, I can't believe that you don't have to have your car inspected every year. They check everything here, tires, brakes, emissions, lights and even your glass. You can't drive your vehicle if there is a crack in your windshield or your tires are too worn.

We don't have car inspections, either. At least not in the country. I believe they have them in Louisville. We also only have registration fees, and I pay less than $100 a year. The only type of "inspection" they do is when you first register the vehicle. Someone steps outside with you, and verifies that you do have a vehicle that matches the description of the one you're registering.... "Yep, you have a dark green Tundra."

Stella, Al's work van would not be road worthy in NY then. Windshield has a small crack since day one of our ownership. It has not grown larger or caused any problems whatsoever. I shall remind him not to drive it in NY hehehe

Morning all.
Not really here either, visitor today.
We have registration checks - cracked windows, bald tyres, bad brakes, broken seat belts, rust etc etc etc can mean repairs before you can get your pink slip to register your car.
In CA all those things were illegal, but the police ticketed you. For registration you had to pass a smog check.

Here you could get ticketed by police for broken tail lights, missing/inoperable headlights, or not wearing seat belts.

Off to fling food. we are having venison burgers with oven baked fries. We had soup and cornbread for lunch. There were lots of veggies in that, so do not need so many for dinner. Al loves his burgers.

Good morning lovely SA8 people.
Anzac Day avatar for Saturday 25th April - Lest We Forget.
My car registration is approximately $600 per year, including 3rd party - no discount for having a hybrid (Prius)and no inspection/MOT required.
Plus comprehensive insurance is $800/year and I keep in locked in a garage when not in use and my postcode is low-crime!
Never mind - our truck was $2000 rego and $3000 insurance. It needed yearly inspection - another $150.

I'll be going to my sister's house on the 25th(5 hour drive). In the morning, her D2's baby Liam will be baptized, and in the afternoon, her D1's daughter Arianna will receive her 1st Communion. My bil is trying to finish the patio he started in their backyard for the party. Their yard is usually filled with beautiful flowers. Years ago he quit his job as a nuclear engineer to work in a nursery(place where they grow plants).

It still boggles my mind that some places don't require cars to be inspected. It's kind of scary. I think people wouldn't bother getting the necessary maintenance done on their vehicles. We replace our tires every year and a half, change the oil every 2500 miles and get a tune up every year. These things are expensive and I'm sure a lot of people would not do it unless they had to. I know there is something that can be removed (catalytic converter?) that will give you much better gas mileage but also puts all the pollutants into the air. During the gas crisis 30 years ago, people were doing that so that is why the cars are required to pass an emissions test here. To make sure that the vehicle is not polluting the air more than is allowable. I just assumed everyone around the world, but especially in the US, had the same requirements.

Hi Stella, it surprises me too that cars in some areas do not have to have an annual inspection for emmissions and safety. I have never been to the USA but have been to Canada, having seen the state of some cars which are on the road out there I guess they don't have the rigorous testing we have here in the UK. If we so much as have a chip in the windscreen in certain areas of the screen our car would fail any inspection. a crack would have you pulled over by the traffic police.

Stella - enjoy your visit to your sister's place for such important occasions.
As far as car inspections not being done here in Qld. We do have random roadside inspections and if a car isn't road-worthy it is confiscated immediately as well as the driver/owner facing heavy fines. The majority of people do maintain their cars and keep them road-worthy.
This page has been going for nearly 24 hours - and 10 more posts to finish the page. What is happening lately?

Stella, have a safe trip to your sisters. How many of your children will be there for the occasion? Will you be staying overnight? Seems a long trip for a day trip, but you are more accustomed to driving distances than I am.

Even though the weather is really sunny I have been a good girl. My craft/office room upstairs (aka the dump) is now nice and tidy and is in a useable condition. The bathroom has had a spring clean too even though it is all less than 6 months old the paintwork and window frame were in a really grubby condition.
