Thank you for the birthday wishes. I started celebrating last night and plan to have a birthday week. In fact started last week with a "new" laptop and a fresh haircut. I need things to make me feel younger. I just don't want to get old. Thanks for the wishes

Thanks for your birthday wishes, I survived not that I had a raging day but a quiet drink or two with friends. The wishes form fellow sudokuites was a nice bonus.

Hi Vici. Thank you for the Thanksgiving greeting. We're having a wonderful celebration with 4 generations, from great-grandpa to grandchildren. Turkey is in the oven, so I slipped away for a moment to the solitude of my room to shower and gather my wits!! I hope you have a happy, blessed Thanksgiving.

My son flew down from Uni, and the 3 of us went to the in-law's party of 12 bearing a rice side dish, pumpkin cheesecake and apple walnut cake. Leftover turkey in my sandwich today!

I appreciate your thinking of me. I will go ahead now & wish YOU a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. I know I won't have much spare time between now & when we leave for Antarctica on Dec. 19. We're getting very excited!

Vici, it was Linda's photos of HER Trip to Antarctica that inpsired me to plan our trip. She & I have been e-mailing for a couple of months now, & she has been a big help. She even sent me a list of what she packed which helped me think of things I might never have thought of on my own. I hope you will make it there someday, too. You still have quite a few years to make trips before you are my age - 65 today!

Vici - I give you my blessing on your love for the unwanted animals! My current three are all rescue animals (I can't count how many cats I've sheltered and loved over the years, and figure I've had about eight rescue dogs (memory is not my strength these days!). My current dogs are from "Happy Whiskers" animal shelter - two youngish women have opened their home and become a shelter - these women work in animal control and bring home and place dogs and cats. I didn't realize at first that my much loved Jasper was considered unadoptable (abused and out of control when I got him a year and a half ago) - when I went to an adoption event to see Bonnie (my new kid, part pit bull) the H.W. folks were astonished at how mannerly Jasper has become - but I worked hard training him, believe me. Bonnie has fit into our home nicely (no one had wanted her after she had recovered from parvo and abuse), and is learning good manners quite quickly (when her basic stubborn streak allows). I have thought of going to train the dogs at H.W., but fear I will bring more home - your video has helped me to gain some insight into that issue, and I think I will volunteer there after the holidays (wish it wasn't so far away - but everything is far away from where I live, I guess!).

Vici - Thank you for your response and words of wisdom - I am going to print and post on my study door what the volunteers told you about volunteering. I do wish I had someone to knock some sense into my head when I want to take in orphans! Jasper has been a bit subdued at times since Bonnie's arrival, but I think it is a good thing for both of them: Jasper is less clingy now (I miss that sometimes, though!), Bonnie gets cuddled like she has never been before in her sad life (though her foster mom was excellent, Bonnie had to be crated a lot because one of the other dogs - a rottie - didn't like her and was hostile to her), and both dogs run and play on our deck and the two adjoining pen areas - so good for high energy Jasper!
Happy Whiskers has suggested I foster dogs - but I know full well what would happen, needless to say! Bonnie's foster mom had a hard time letting her go, but she is more sensible than am I (besides, she has a rational husband to "guide" her on these issues).

Ah, Vici, the little kitty story just breaks my heart. I'll keep the precious one in my prayers. As any animal lover knows, there's nothing quite like the agony of watching one of our pet friends go through something awful. Keep me posted.
