It seems that SA7 is getting old and slow. It is time for a new page. Welcome to SA8.

Hello Katitude, nice to meet you! :)
June, the family history is fun, and I've picked up a couple of useful facts in the last few days, though my family really isn't very interested ... c'est la vie! (trans. "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it")
Well, I'm not easily bored, and that's great for going through pages of dull facts, looking for the one shining moment that warrents sashaying round the house, chanting like a madwoman while waving the relevant printout triumphantly over my head. (My family does not react to this in any way) Just because hubby's family can be traced back to the 15th century - sheepstealers and murderers the pack of them! On the run from the King and the sheriff and had to change their name - what's to be proud of there, I ask you? ;)

Suzanne, the standard advice is - start with what you know about your family. Check documents, birth, marriage and death cetificates. Official documents are more likely to lead you in the right direction, though even they may ontain mistakes. It's a bit like playing detective.
Dare I say, never trust "family stories' - they may be true, or may contain a shred of truth, but often they're garbled, confused or just plain made-up! On the other hand, they may be the absolute truth! One of our family stories said an ancestor was "Physician to the King of Denmark" - yeah, right! Well, he was - documented and proven! Whoo-hoo! Once you start looking you'll be hooked, I guarantee. :D

Hi Julie.

Judy - I have just started the family tree thing myself. Between that and my new found addiction/hobby on this thing, I'm sure I'll be divorced real soon..!!

Suzanne - I hope you come back and read this tomorrow. You are in the right place to trace family history. The church of the LDS people in SLC had the best geneological database in the world when I was helping Mum. Particularly US records. Look into that. Surely it is still operating.

I am taking a coffee break and read that you are all saying goodbye. Bugger!

Family talk says I have at least one bushranger and French royalty in my back ground - opposite sides of the family! It would be nice to confirm or otherwise, but not at the mo, maybe after my prac....

I have done a quick skim of pages, but am falling asleep (past midnight) and can't remember . . . a thing.

Hubby has been working about 3 years on his family (his father's side). In the past few days, we may have found a previously unknown connection, which we will need to research further. Unfortunately, hubby's Dad was first generation in US, and records in Europe have been lost over the years due to wars.

A number of years ago, one of my aunts got quite far back on my Mom's side of the family. Her grandson has continued work on it. A sister and I had hoped to get together with him and share what information we have, but we just haven't found the time.

Really must run now. Good night, Everyone!

Bean will you still be able to cash those travellers cheques? I've never used them so don't know if they have an expiry date, if not then you have a nice little windfall to spend on yourself.

It's supposed to be a beautiful day today, up to 70F! I'll be lugging 10 boxes of clothes I packed up for charity yesterday. At least they'll be out of the house. Ian's old stuff has to go over as well, but I won't have the strength to do it today.
