Road trip that was unreal. . . Long, skip on by if you like

Friday afternoon, between storms, Al decided he needed cigarettes. Best price is a store about 8 miles down the main road, south. One small problem, we could not get to main road. West on the unpaved road was flooded, and road closed barricades half a mile before the creek. Road north that would lead to this main road about 3 miles away, flooded we can see about one block of the road under water. (block in USA is a distance between intersections/cross streets in a metro area) Now, we talking dirt roads, heavy clay and chert, that gets slicker than when it rains, and becomes like quicksand when under water.

OK, lets try west, and see what happens. if we go west about 3 miles, can go south again and parallel the main road and come out just above the store, how will that go?

It was a lovely trip through green pastures, woodlands heavy with dogwoods and redbud trees. Part of the road has been recently tarred and graveled, some new big houses, mini farms, wealthy folks' play pretties, hobby farms. Good thing it was enjoyable. We got out in an area of nothing but woodlands in the middle of nowhere, and had to cross a one lane wooden bridge , no railings, very similar to our bridge, but unfamiliar to us. the creek was roiling and almost touching the undersides of the bridge, but we crossed it just fine. Was I clutching my 'oh chit handle' by that point? First we see on the far side of the bridge is water encroaching on each side of the road, not good. then around the slight bend in the road, a block long stretch of water covering the road. NO telling how deep, or where the road actually is/ We were unable to safely back across that bridge now that we were off it. Al had to turn around on what is now a one lane road, with mud and water on each side. Glad it was not me driving, but then, I have no need for cigarettes, would not have ventured from home.

OK, he is a good driver, he can do this, so I sit and pretend I am elsewhere and keep all advice to myself. Up a few feet, and back a few feet, up again, back again, over and over. staying on the relative safety of visible dirt. THEN from across the flooded road comes a good ole boy in a pickup truck! Truck sits 1 1/2 foot higher off the ground than our mini van, and water was up to doors on that. Good decision Al, no way we could have crossed it with put flooding our vehicle. But would the truck stop leaving us enough room to complete our turn around maneuver?

If that truck encroaching on our limited space from behind were not enough, here comes a car from other direction, coming across that bridge to fast for conditions, even though she could see us sitting at a precarious angle across the only dry land. She stops while still on the bridge and just sits. We cannot move to the side to give her passage, without being in the water. She shrugs her shoulders, and looks like it is all our fault. Hubby is about to loose his cool. I

Hubby is about to loose his cool. I do the fingers walking motion to her, hoping she can understand and back up. Yes, she was not too happy about it but backs up. One more back and forward for Al and we are back across the bridge and breathing easier. The guy in the pickup crosses behind us, stops and talks to the girl in the car. I think the truck was there leading/dragging autos across the flooded out road but we did not tarry to watch.

We retrace our steps, going back NORTH away from out destination, then east several miles, North again, then west several MORE miles and intersect the main road many miles north of our street. Going south again and then we pass the intersection of our road, the first flooded road we saw and see how far out of banks the creek is . Water is just under the bridge, ( it is the same creek where we had to turn around miles and minutes ago) there is a lake either side of the bridge. We are now once again about 1 mile from our home, on the wrong side of a flooded creek. He proceeds to the store, gets his cigs, and we back track, MILES north, then east, then south, then west, making a huge square around the floods.

It has taken us over 2 1/2 hours of driving to make a 20 min trip! It is a good thing it was a pretty drive through the countryside. I said to AL, 2 and a half hours? we could have gone somewhere. He grinned and said, we have.

Heidi, it could have been a lot worse. We had ample opportunity to become stuck , stranded a long way from civilization. I am glad we made it back home. Completing our errand was an added bonus.

MizT, your description of your drive has emptied my head of all other comments I was going to make. I think that one goes down as a good thing to have to talk about over dinner, hope you never have to do it again!!!

Ally's arm is now in a condition that she will allow others to see, though she wants me to capture the odd hair I missed. I've told her she will have to wait a while as it's not good for her skin to have a double dose.

Ebob is limping around but getting better, or at least she was last night. No one else is out of bed yet this morning...

Heidi, not sure I have seen white verbena for sale here. they sound lovely. I love pansies. My Pansies might have 5 to 8 more weeks with them fore they die out from heat. Are you planting the flowers this weekend?

I just filled 3 containers, 2 with impatiens in a bright melon pink, and a long planter with pale pink, red leafed begonias. We will have one cold night over weekend, I shall have to cover them, but I just needed to play in the dirt.

I have not seen any coleus for sale yet, I always have some of the dark leafed coleus. What colors are yours? Will these go in containers or into your garden beds?

Did I say I love flowers?

MORNING SUZY! Sorry I emptied your head this morning.

If we live long enough we might have a mini trip like that, if we are fool enough to try to go somewhere. These spring floods or creeks happen every few years. It is pasture land and woodlands, so just an inconvenience, no big danger unless some fools try to drive over one of those bridges mentioned when water goes over the bridge. There have been a few young men and women who have died, not realizing how little moving water it takes to float a auto off a bridge.

I do wish I had taken a camera with me. I will not be making another trip just to take photos, nope, not me.

OH HEIDI, not far away. What do you still have unfinished? Is the tour the reason for early planting of flowers? Isn't it still early in your area? Tad early here and you are at least one zone lower than me?

Oh MizT, not even so we could see some? Those young people who think they are cleverer than old fogies, and immortal, live here too... it's very sad.

Ebob has taken to carrying her camera with her everywhere. One of these days she will be ready for a good quality fancy shmancy camera and will probably have a house full of photos.

No building going on here. You must be thinking of someone else. We ARE still working on repairs from the ice storm, but so are everyone else around here, so they won't care much. This wasn't my idea to do this at such short notice, it was IH's doing. But he won't lift a finger to get ready for it.

MizT, What an adventure! My first reaction was it would have been agood time to give up smoking.
I love dogwoods though. Unforunately they do not grow here. I did try but it did not do well and finally died.

A question from a UK Science exam...

Our moon seems to disappear during an eclipse. Some people say this is because an old lady covers the moon with her cloak. She does this so that thieves cannot steal the shiny coins on the surface. Which of these would help scientists to prove or disprove this idea?

A) Collect evidence from people who believe the lady sees the thieves

B) Shout to the lady that the thieves are coming

C) Send a probe to the moon to search for coins

D) Look for fingerprints

Good morning everyone. MizTricia, love your road trip story! I agree, sounds like a good time for Al to quit smoking...
Heidi, hope you and Gil feel better soon.
Suzy, glad Ally's arm is looking better; hope Ebob feels better soon; the science exam question -WHAT?!!
Love hearing about everyone's gardens. Rob bought me some nice pots for my birthday and some pretty annuals to plant - things we can easily hand water, as we're still on severe restrictions. Luckily we've had some good rain lately - the grass in the backyard looked completly dead, but now it's a beautiful green again. :)
Hi to Tami, Becky, June, Broni and Gail and anyone else who's popped in while I wasn't looking. :)

In about half an hour, we're gonna be hit with a massive thunderboomer. It won't last long, but there's a rotation in there I don't like. Conditions look right for a tornado.
