Stella.... Border Collies are small dynamos... workaholics..... faster than speeding bullets..... much smarter than sheep. They had about a dozen of the best working on moving those sheep exactly where they should go. And they don't make mistakes. I imagine that most of the 2 days was used in fitting all those sheep with LED jackets and testing the remote control lights. Moving them was the easy part.

Heidi's right about border collies. They are fascinaing to watch when working. I had a friend who had one on a farm. One day my friend had to herd some cows as they guy who normally did it was ill. He took Ben with him, but because he was so fast and he would nip the legs of the cows my friend had to slow the dog down a bit by tucking one of his front paws through his collar. It didn't slow him down much, and wasn't a problem for the dog.

Yep.... one border collie can do the work of more than 10 people. That's because the sheep respect them. They'll run over the top of people. I know. I've been trampled a lot.

Morning all!
My kids want a border collie. I don't - they are working dogs and would be bored stupid with nothing to do all day!
BTW - I agree what the kid did was dumb and dangerous, that's why I called him 'idiot kid', but this man physically attacked children who DID NOT throw the yoghurt, because they tried to leave. He is dangerous!

Nola, my internet connection sucked yesterday too. Today is seems fine.
Stella, d1 still hasn't done her written test so I don't have to stress about the lessons yet. I'm not looking forward to it after the lesson she had in the paddock! She actually squealed...

Suzy.... are you sure that wasn't my neighbor? I have a psychopathic neighbor who violently attacks anybody who crosses him (I was attacked when I refused to "GIVE" him some of my land that he wanted).
That guy who attacked the kids should be in jail. There is no excuse for his behavior. The families of the kids he touched need to press charges for assault and harassment. The police will have his name.

Aw Heidi, why wouldn't you just give your land to anyone who wants it? Did you call the police on him? I hope so.
I agree the man should be arrested. One of the mothers of a child this man put his hands on was waiting for her turn to talk to the police... Hopefully she got to have her say, she seemed a bit mild to me so might not have pushed herself forward... The kids tell me a 5 year old who was on the bus was crying with fear.

About the video clip, I do think it is an advertisement, and these people got paid to do it. I do wonder about the mind of the person who first said " see, we can put these lights on a flock of sheep. . . ."
Heidi, did you read how the biggest problem was finding enough sheep? It being lambing season, could not use pregnant sheep or new mothers, they said.
I too think the border collies are fantastic, and a good dog can put a sheep anywhere they want. In a recent book I read, sheep stampeding, a border collie jumped up on the nearest, ran on their backs to the lead sheep and turned it! Would a dog really do that Heidi?
Now for cows, a blue heeler is a natural, I watched a non trained pup help a neighboring farmer having trouble driving a couple of escaped cows through a gate. He trotted over and just did it, without being asked hehe.

I have seen a border collie run across the backs of sheep. They have to in tight areas.
My favorite neighbor used to milk cows. He had a marvelous Blue Heeler named Wolf. One day, one of his bulls went berserk, tore down a fence, and went after George. This bull probably weighed 2,500 lbs. Wolf rushed to the rescue, and as soon as that bull got 5 feet from George, Wolf turned him into a bloody mess. He quickly forgot about George, then forgot about attacking. That dog was the best helper George could have. He brought the cows in to be milked, sorted out anyone who needed to be sorted, and let George know when a cow was calving. And he trained himself.

Morning folks.
Here you are talking about one of my favourite topics...working dogs. Kelpies were used by most of my family and neighbours when I was growing up. [wool country]
Tricia I have seen good dogs do exactly what you have read about. A good dog is impossible to put a value on... an old flame of mine gave his best dog mouth -to-mouth when it accidentally hung itself after falling from a moving vehicle.
My grandfather used to set a mob of sheep on the route to the railway siding [have forgotten how many miles..] and leave the dog in charge. He would then catch them up at the siding and my mother said that the dog never lost a head. I remember the dogs he used to breed and train...beautiful.

Good news about our bomb, it's not going to cost a bomb to register, just a fire cracker....
Sad news for a friend, her husband has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. They have been building a yacht and were only a couple of months off leaving to sail the 'world' for a couple of years....

Good morning lovely SA8 people - been busy for days (BIZZEE like eaa) and just calling in quickly to catch up and say hello.
Heidi - so pleased that Lucky is settling in well and that Gil's likes him.
MizT - loved that clip of the sheep and, yes, Rayray must see it.
There was so much more to say and CRAFT's has got to me already.

Suzy (and anyone else who can offer any advice or has had experience) - we need help/advice on how to tackle bullying. My son's two older girls 9 and 7 are having to change school because of frequent bullying. I'm so upset for them. They are going to a smaller school with a 'No Bullying' Policy. This current school does nothing to stop or discipline the bullies.
In the younger one's case, it is the MOTHER of another girl who is bullying her every time she catches her on her own before or after school. The mother has been told, if she has a problem with Emily to come to the office but, no, she terrorises Emily who is so traumatised, she is terrified to go to school. 'No witnesses - nothing can be done' - according to the school.
In the case of Hayley, the older one, her so-called friends take her lunch saying 'I won't be your friend if you don't give me your lunch!'.
I am relieved that they are changing schools because this has been going on for a while but, being their Nanny, I feel so bad and so hurt for them. And I wonder what is the use of bringing up nice, gentle, well-mannered children if they have to deal with the dregs of society as part of their everyday life? How can you toughen them up without them becoming part of the problem. It's tearing my DIL apart - she's already on anti-depressants and looked completely shattered on Sunday. I don't think she's sleeping.
Can anybody offer any good advice?

Suzy - re the man and the yoghurt story. I totally agree that the man should not have taken the photos and they should have been confiscated. Yes, it was a dangerous thing to throw the yoghurt but he made the whole thing worse by his actions.
If you read my post above and then add this story to it - it just makes you shudder at the state of society!

Cyn...it is possible to survive bullying and turn out to be normal, healthy and well adjusted. It is difficult. I will put my best cap on and try and work out what worked for us...it is of course different for everyone. I can remember the boys at school standing over me with a big stick trying to make me talk [I was v. very quiet and they thought I was dumb - couldn't speak.] I bit them!! I wouldn't recommend that but it worked!! I wasn't even quite 5 yo!!

CynB, Im going to have a think before posting too, but im pretty sure that what the mother did can be reported to the police. Son#1 was a target for one particular bully only as a child. Obviously I discussed it with the principal whose main concern was what could my son do to prevent himself being a target!!!! The bully himself...nothing done. A 12 year old boy tried to punch me in the back at school yesterday...his punishment? He had to apologise....yeah so heartfelt and genuine it was too

Cyn, unfortunately my girls' experiences have been the same as Susan's - learn resilience rather than tackle the bullying problem itself.
I will try to describe what worked best for us and send it to you in an email. I feel for you DIL, it's heartbreaking to watch them go through it...

Susan, the school captain repeatedly bounced a basketball off Ally's head when she was in kindergarten and only stopped when a parent confronted him - his punishment was also an apology....

Cyn, if the school won't do anything, I would go to the police. What this woman is doing is assault. Assault does not have to be physical, a verbal attack is just as bad. How dare she, and what a tough woman she is to be picking on a child. Disgusting.
